[**Back to the Order Build Overview**](https://vestigohelp.mccreadiegroup.com/en/knowledgebase/protocol-order-build-overview?hsLang=en)   Inventory validation, scanning, patient return, and protocol arm settings help ensure that the correct inventory is dispensed, required returns are tracked, and users only have access to appropriate orders throughout the dispensing process. These configurations support inventory accountability, protocol compliance, and participant safety by controlling how inventory is validated, how prescription returns are managed, and which orders are available based on a participant’s enrolled arm. ![](https://vestigohelp.mccreadiegroup.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-02-2026-01-33-27-6126-AM.png?width=577&height=286&name=image-png-Oct-02-2026-01-33-27-6126-AM.png)   ### Required permissions **ProtocolSnapshot** - Ability to view the Summary page of a Protocol (Protocol Snapshot). Required for all other protocol view permissions. **ProtocolManagement** - Protocol Management **EditProtocolDrugsOrders** - Drug management for a protocol   ### Inventory Validation This setting is only visible if your site has contracted for [Barcode Validation](https://vestigohelp.mccreadiegroup.com/en/knowledgebase/getting-started-with-vestigo-barcode-validation?hsLang=en). To learn more about the settings available for this order setting, check out the [Protocol Order Barcode Validation Settings](https://vestigohelp.mccreadiegroup.com/en/knowledgebase/protocol-order-barcode-validation-settings?hsLang=en) article.   ### Patient Return Required The Patient Return Required setting allows sites to track prescription returns following dispensing and configure how users are guided through the return workflow. This option is only available for Order Builds that include Full Tracking and/or Dispense Only Tracking drug builds. If the Order Build contains a None Tracking drug build, returns cannot be processed for that drug. ![](https://vestigohelp.mccreadiegroup.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Oct-02-2026-01-42-20-6558-AM.png?width=562&height=376&name=image-png-Oct-02-2026-01-42-20-6558-AM.png) This setting includes three configuration components: ###### Require a Patient Return Enable this option when inventory dispensed under the order is expected to be returned by the patient. Once enabled, the prescription will be eligible for patient return tracking. ###### Expected Return Timeframe Enter the number of days in which the return is expected. If a return is not entered within the specified timeframe, the prescription will appear in the **Drug Returns** alert tab as an overdue patient return. ###### Dispense Navigation Select how Vestigo should direct users after dispense verification: - **Do Not Navigate on Dispense**: No additional navigation occurs after dispense verification. This option is typically used when returns are expected days or weeks after dispensing. - **Navigate Directly on Dispense Verification with Return Selected**: The verifying user is automatically taken to the prescription return screen with the disposition set to **Return**. - **Navigate Directly on Dispense Verification with Destruction Selected**: The verifying user is automatically taken to the prescription return screen with the disposition set to **Destruction**.   **Consideration point**: If the drug attached to the order build has the option “Require Verification for Patient Returns” checked, and the order build is set to “Navigate directly on dispense verification with Destruction selected”, the user will be navigated to the prescription return screen, but the disposition will be pre-set to returns and cannot be destroyed until the return is verified or an override is applied. **Note** - Edits to the Patient Return requirement do not impact historical prescriptions where the order was used.   ### Protocol Arm Availability Select the protocol arm or arms in which the order should be available. An Order Build can be assigned to a single arm or multiple arms, allowing sites to control which orders are presented during dispensing. Users will only be able to select orders that are associated with the participant's enrolled arm, helping ensure that the appropriate dispensing options are available based on protocol enrollment. **Note** - Edits to the Protocol Arm Availability can impact previous dispenses.
