The Protocol Drug Build establishes how each drug or supply is identified, tracked, stored, dispensed, returned, and reported throughout a protocol in Vestigo. This overview explains the required permissions, key configuration decisions, and important considerations for creating a new drug build or safely updating an existing one.    ### Required permissions **ProtocolSnapshot** - Ability to view the Summary page of a Protocol (Protocol Snapshot). Required for all other protocol view permissions. **ProtocolManagement** - Protocol Management **EditProtocolDrugsOrders** - Drug management for a protocol   ### Where to Access the Drug Build Drug builds live on the protocol in the Drugs and Orders tab when editing a protocol. 1. Navigate to the protocol 2. Select **Edit Protocol** 3. Click on the **Drugs/Orders** tab From this tab, users can access the protocol’s drug builds and orders to add or manage the appropriate drug configuration.  ![](https://vestigohelp.mccreadiegroup.com/hs-fs/hubfs/image-png-Sep-29-2026-01-13-56-1026-AM.png?width=670&height=308&name=image-png-Sep-29-2026-01-13-56-1026-AM.png) ### When to edit an existing build An existing drug build may be edited when its configuration needs to be corrected or updated, like changing a control location. Before making changes, review whether inventory has been received or dispensing activity has occurred, as changes could unintentionally affect previous transactions. Use particular caution when modifying settings that determine how inventory is counted, dispensed, returned, or displayed on accountability records. **Tip** - If the change represents a different product configuration, such as a new package size or bottle count, create a new drug build rather than modifying the existing one. Additionally, once inventory has been received, certain fields become locked and cannot be edited. Those fields include, the Inventory Units field and Tracking type. If those fields need to be changed, new drug build must be created if it was configured incorrectly. ### When to Create a New Drug Build Create a new drug build when a change affects how the product is packaged, counted, or managed in inventory. For example, if inventory is received in a different bottle count or package configuration than the existing build, the new configuration should be tracked under a separate drug build rather than changing the existing one. A new drug build is also required when the **Inventory Units** were configured incorrectly and inventory has already been received, as this field can no longer be changed after receipt. Creating a separate drug build helps prevent changes from unintentionally affecting previous inventory and dispensing transactions. Before editing an existing build, determine whether the change represents a correction to the current configuration or a distinct product configuration that should be managed separately.   ### A Brief Overview of the Major Configuration Sections The Protocol Drug Build defines how each drug or supply is configured and managed throughout the protocol. It includes settings for the drug description, inventory units, strength, inventory tracking, storage and receiving locations, supplier information, reordering, returns, destruction, and verification requirements. Because these settings affect inventory, dispensing, accountability records, and reporting, each field should be reviewed carefully to ensure the build supports the protocol’s requirements and site workflow.
